In December, 1971, a local act of the legislature changed the form of government in St. Clair County to provide for a chairman and four associate members (commissioners). The chairman and four members of the County Commission are elected county-wide for four years with each commissioner to be a resident and qualified elector of one of the four districts in the county. The Commission operates under a unit system of government which gives the county a more efficient method to utilize the manpower, materials, equipment and finances of the county highway department.
The Commission holds regular meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at 9:00 a.m. in the Administrative Center Courthouse Annex #1 in Ashville and on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 9:00 a.m. in the Courthouse in Pell City. Informal Work sessions are held each Thursday prior to the meeting on Tuesday at the Administrative Center in Ashville to discuss the issues and set the agenda of the upcoming meeting.
